Anthony Joshua’s Sheffield Flat: A Glimpse into His Down-to-Earth Training Lifestyle for Miller Fight.

Even though he is the wealthiest boxer in Britain, world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua still enjoys the little things in life when he is in training.

In the weeks leading up to fight night, Joshua prefers a more “humble” lifestyle than others, such as Floyd Mayweather, who loves to show off his collection of fancy cars and mansions.

The heavyweight champion of the IBF, WBO, and WBA is getting ready to face Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller in New York for his US debut.

AJ is working hard in Sheffield, where he trains at the GB boxing base with the future stars of boxing, much as he did before winning gold at London 2012.

He spends the weeks preceding the first bell living here as well. Despite being undefeated in his career and reportedly earning up to £100 million, Joshua still resides in a comfortable two-bedroom tent apartment.

This week, he performed his own rendition of the popular MTV show “Cribs” and offered viewers a tour of his “humble abode,” giving fans a glimpse into his life while he was in training.

‘This is where it goes down,’ Joshua says in the video as he welcomes the cameras into his home.

Inside the fridge in his kitchen, Joshua keeps Supermalt and an array of vegetables and juices

‘They’re comfortable, they work… there is no need to change it,’ he says of the ‘vintage’ chairs

He begins by taking fans into the living room, which features a worn black sofa and armchair, both of which are now covered in patches of brown.

‘You’ve probably noticed the vintage seats, we’ve had these seats in here for about the last seven years,’ he says.

‘But you know the old saying: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. They’re comfortable, they work, I can relax… it’s what I need so there is no need to change it.’

There is some room for state-of-the-art technology, however. Joshua shows off a special chair where he uses his ‘NormaTec’ compression kit, a ‘pulse recovery system’ which helps athletes recharge in between workouts.

AJ’s lounge is attached to a similarly simple kitchen, which features electric cookers and a fridge full of the fuel needed to keep the champion in shape.

Joshua lies on what he calls his ‘big single bed’, where he rests during the camp in Sheffield

AJ also showed off the cross he keeps by his bed, given to him by his mother for ‘protection’

Packed inside are a lot of vegetables, cartons of coconut water and bottles of Supermalt – which was developed in the 1960s and originally used by the Nigerian Army as a dietary supplement to help troops re-energise.

‘Nothing too exciting but it works,’ he says. ‘Unfortunately there is no champagne, no vodka, no Ciroc, just water, Supermalt and cold-pressed juice.’

Joshua then moves into his en-suite ‘master bedroom’, which features little other than ‘what I call a big single bed’.

But he insists: ‘It works. I can kick back after a long day, just think about my training, sparring, what I’m trying to achieve in and outside the ring… it’s very quiet, not much goes on in here.’

Next to his bed he keeps a cross, which he reveals his mother gave him as ‘protection’.

‘I can kick back after a long day… it’s very quiet, not much goes on in here,’ the champion says

The flat’s other bedroom features two double beds and ‘the lovely view’ over the Steel City

Inside the bathroom, meanwhile, is a window which allows AJ to ‘keep an eye on anything that’s going down.’

He jokes: ‘Sometimes you have to keep an eye on the streets and check nothing dodgy is happening. Make sure everything is in order.

‘Sometimes I just come here and stand for hours making sure everything is smooth, nothing is going on and we’re all protected.’

One of AJ’s closest friends and a key member of his team, David Ghansa, lives with him in Sheffield, helping him manage his life while he focuses on getting in shape.

He stays in the second bedroom which features two double beds and, in Joshua’s words, ‘the lovely view’ over the Steel City.

AJ looks out the bathroom window, where he can ‘keep an eye on anything that’s going down’

‘Excuse the smell,’ Joshua jokes as he shows the camera crew round the communal bathroom

‘While you’re in here you can’t hear anything, it’s peaceful,’ he adds.

The final stop on the tour is the second toilet, ‘that everyone and their dog uses’.

AJ jokes: ‘Excuse the smell but that’s the communal bathroom!’

He adds: ‘When people have come here and when people have seen this place, they do wonder why we haven’t moved.

‘(It’s) because it works. It’s peaceful, everyone has their own space, better sleeping, food to eat and it accommodates what we need for training.

‘And do you know what’s brilliant about it? The gym is honestly a two-minute roll down the hill… there’s no excuses not to train so it’s a perfect location.’
