Gremio’s Luis Suarez Ponders Stay, Potential Victory against Inter Miami & Messi in 2024

Luis Suarez has been expected join Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in January, however he may be changing his mind and considering signing a contract extension with Gremio before his deal expires.

A report emerging from Brazil and reporter Jeremias Wernek has stated that on the heels of a hattrick he scored against Botafogo FC, Suarez could stay with Gremio in Brazil for another season.

The club apparently now have ‘a glimmer of hope’ he could elect to stay for another year but the chance of moving to Major League Soccer is still ‘a real possibility’.

Suarez has been suffering from arthritis in his knee and initially wanted to cut his deal with Gremio short in order to reunite with Messi, but agreed to remain with the club until December.

The 36-year-old forward has struggled with injuries has had to use injections to help deal with knee pain amid the intense schedule in Brazil, which features games more closely packed together than MLS.

Suarez had long been expected to reunite with Lionel Messi and sign with Inter Miami

Striker Josef Martinez is already planning to leave Inter Miami to make way for Suarez

Suarez currently has 23 goals and 16 assists this season for Gremio through all competitions.

If the native of Uruguay does indeed choose not to reunite with Messi it may throw a major wrench into Miami’s squad building plans ahead of the new season.

Starting striker Josef Martinez is expected to leave the team and his departure was made with the plan of Suarez joining the squad.

Miami are set to begin preseason in on January 10 and it remains to be seen who the starting no. 9 will be ahead of Messi’s first full season in MLS.

As of now the most high-profile friendly scheduled for Miami is against a team both Messi and manager Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino once played for back in Argentina, Newell’s Old Boys.

Messi and Suarez played together for six years in Barcelona, winning four Spanish league titles and the Champions League.
