There seems to be no limit to the strange abilities that a Devil Fruit can bestow.
Within the world of One Piece, there are intriguing foods called Devil Fruits which grant whoever eats them supernatural powers, ranging from flight, to animal transformation, to everything that falls between. Most notably, protagonist Monkey D. Luffy, eater of the Gomu Gomu No Mi Devil Fruit, can stretch his body like rubber thanks to the powers it has granted him. Throughout the series, Luffy has come face-to-face with hundreds of devil fruit users, ranging from the friendly Nico Robin to the villainous Buggy the Star Clown.
Complimenting the plethora of god-like powers the Devil Fruits offer are a variety of highly unusual fruits, which grant strange abilities that may help, or hinder their user. Fans will generally agree that there are a handful of Devil Fruits that are downright bizarre, with powers that turn people into abstract art, or even extinct animals.
Updated on December 27, 2023, by Rei Penber: Devil Fruits form the primary power system in One Piece and, for that reason, fans have seen countless of these incredible fruits pop up in the story over the years. These are mystical fruits that grant various abilities to the user, ranging from transforming into an animal to becoming an element itself. While most are abilities that fans absolutely love for what they offer, there are others that are absolutely bizarre in the way they function and exist. This list already goes over some strange Devil Fruits and, now, it has been updated to include a bunch more.
14. Kibi Kibi no Mi
Can Control Animals And Smile Users
The Kibi Kibi no Mi is a Paramecia type of Devil Fruit eaten by Tama. This Devil Fruit allows her to produce kibi dango from her cheeks. These kibi dango, when fed to any animal or someone with an artificial Zoan type of Devil Fruit, particularly the SMILES, make them completely obedient to Tama. This Devil Fruit was incredibly important in the Straw Hat Pirates, the ninjas, and the samurai winning the war of Wano Country.
The Kibi Kibi no Mi is quite overpowered and the effects of this Devil Fruit last for a Fortnight. After that, the user can either stick to their old self, or, they take on the new rules as the servants of Tama.
13. SMILEs
Can Offer Animal-Like Features
The SMILEs are quite a powerful bunch of Devil Fruits that were created by none other than Caesar Clown. These Devil Fruits are quite dangerous to consume, and even though they do offer somewhat of a benefit, they are best avoided. Simply put, the SMILE Devil Fruits, when consumed, may grant the user the power of a Zoan type, however, this power is partial, and the user might simply develop appendages that belong to an animal, instead of gaining the ability to voluntarily transform into any animal.
Furthermore, the biggest risk with consuming a SMILE Devil Fruit is the fact that only out of every 10 ends up working. The others are failures and still end up taking away one’s ability to swim despite not working. Furthermore, those who eat the failed Devil Fruits end up losing their emotions other than the ability to laugh, forever.
12. Woshu Woshu no Mi
Can Wash Away Evil and Malice
The Woshu Woshu no Mi is a Paramecia type of Devil Fruit that was eaten by Tsuru of the Marines. This Devil Fruit allows her to wash people like they are clothes, and this completely incapacitates them. Furthermore, it washes away their bad deeds and their bad nature and makes them good people. This is quite a bizarre Devil Fruit in more ways than one and one that only a genius such as Oda could come up with.
Fans would have loved to see more of this Devil Fruit, however, since Tsuru has barely been involved in the plot in One Piece, this Devil Fruit hasn’t featured as much either.
11. Baku Baku no Mi
Can Eat Anything
The Baku Baku no Mi is quite a bizarre Paramecia type of Devil Fruit that was eaten by King Wapol, who formerly led the Drum Kingdom and is the current King of the Black Drum Kingdom. This Devil Fruit allows him to consume anything and everything in his path.
He can then make use of the properties of things they consume using an ability known as Baku Baku Factory. This Devil Fruit power is quite special but also very weird. Fans saw him utilize these powers when he fought against Luffy in the Drum Island arc and while it didn’t help him during the battle, it certainly proved to be quite impressive, to say the least.
10. Beri Beri no Mi
Can Turn Into Berries
The Beri Beri no Mi might just be one of the weirdest Devil Fruits that Oda has introduced in One Piece. This Devil Fruit is a Paramecia type and allows the user to transform their body into berries that can simply float around. That is all that this Devil Fruit does and it actually ends up being a disadvantage more than it is an advantage.
The berries can simply be picked up by the enemies and this would then severely incapacitated the user. Any berry that ends up being hit will transfer the pain to the user and, once again, prove to be a massive disadvantage.
9. The Jacket-Jacket Fruit: Kelly Funk
Transform Into a Mind-Controlling Skin Jacket
Debuting in Chapter 715, Kelly Funk has a Devil Fruit that is fairly useless to him. The Jake Jake no Mi’s primary ability transforms the consumer into a jacket of human skin, accommodating any wearer by stretching and growing in size.
Whilst initial impressions might deem this Devil Fruit as nothing more than a fashion statement, the Jake Jake no Mi has a powerful ability; the wearer of the jacket comes under the control of the jacket itself. This allows the consumer to make use of the wearers’ physicality and abilities but doesn’t stop the fruit itself from offering a bizarre method to achieve this.
8. The Hobby-Hobby Fruit: Sugar
Eternal Youth, Transform Others Into Toys
The Hobi Hobi no Mi Devil Fruit has a strange, and on the surface surprisingly useful, power. It allows the user to transform people into toys, erasing their existence from others in the process as they become figurines and dolls. While that in itself is a bizarre power, what’s stranger is the secondary effect it’s combined with.
As evidenced by Sugar, eating the Hobi Hobi no Mi causes the user to gain eternal youth, as she physically appears 10, but in reality is closer to 22. Whilst it makes sense that two child-like abilities are rolled into one, it is still bizarre that transformation into toys has been bundled with one of the most desirable powers in the series.
7. The Bubble-Bubble Fruit: Kalifa
Create And Control Soap, “Wash Away” the Powers of Others
The Awa Awa no Mi Devil Fruit is deceptively powerful. It grants the user the ability to create and control soap and bubbles, which in turn allows them to clean dirt and other mess with ease. The true strength of the Awa Awa no Mi, however, is hidden within a more abstract definition of cleaning.
As demonstrated by Kalifa, this Devil Fruit can ‘clean off’ powers, in turn making the victim powerless and a soap human. It does suffer from some rather ridiculous weaknesses, however, as water will eradicate the effects of the Awa Awa no Mi almost immediately, and strong winds can alter the direction of the bubbles so that they are too far away to be effective.
6. The Garb-Garb Fruit: Kin’emon
Transform Small Objects Into Clothes
The Fuku Fuku no Mi grants the consumer the power of clothes creation. Whilst ridiculous at first glance, it does offer countless options regarding disguises and espionage, which no doubt make up for the fact it is incredibly useless in combat. Occasionally, however, this Devil Fruit has been shown to make weapons and armor, perhaps hinting that its properties are far more expansive than initially thought.
That being said, the Fuku Fuku no Mi does have more ridiculous conditions. The consumer can only create clothes out of small objects such as leaves and stones, and if they aren’t near any, it is entirely useless. Alongside this, the clothes must be imagined, so quality and style are limited only by imagination. With such bizarre rules for usage, the Fuku Fuku no Mi is definitely an odd piece of work.
5. The Hor-Hor Fruit: Emporio Ivankov
Inject Hormones Through Finger Syringes
Dangerously powerful, the Horu Horu no Mi allows the user to inject hormones that quickly alter body chemistry. The injection is done through finger syringes, Iva has shown to use this power in a variety of ways, altering body temperature, stamina, growth, and emotional state at a whim.
That being said, it’s still a strange selection of powers and application methods, but Horu Horu no Mi is a powerful beast nonetheless. When the Devil Fruit allows the consumer to alter practically everything about a person in mere seconds, it proves to be a deadly tool against Luffy’s enemies.
4. The Bis-Bis Fruit: Charlotte Cracker
Conjure Anything, But It’s Made Out of Biscuits
The Bisu Bisu no Mi allows the user to generate and manipulate matter at will, creating soldiers, armor, and projectiles with ease. It was used effectively by the villainous Charlotte Cracker to cause chaos for Luffy and his friends. There is only one catch, however; the matter that can be used has to be biscuit.
However odd that appears, it still works as a devastating weapon. The conjuration abilities are near-limitless, allowing endless biscuits to appear, but they are still biscuits after all, so consumption, or softening with water, are viable methods to defeat a Bisu Bisu no Mi user.
3. The Art-Art Fruit: Duchess
Transform Anything Into Two-Dimensional Abstract Art
The Ato Ato no Mi is considered by fans to be one of the weirdest fruits in One Piece. Its application allows the consumer to transform three-dimensional space into two dimensions, but this is always done by turning the object into abstract art.
It works on people, objects, and locations, rendering them useless as they become decorative symbols. That being said, its powers are undone if the consumer is incapacitated, and so it is more of a temporary nuisance than a truly horrifying fate.
2. The Flower-Flower Fruit: Nico Robin
Sprout Body Parts From Any Surface
A truly horrifying power, the Hana Hana no Mi freaked out fans upon its introduction, transforming the user Nico Robin into a body-horror icon. Truly strange, the Hana Hana no Mi enables its consumer to replicate and sprout pieces of their body from any surface, assisting in combat through odd and memorable ways.
Fans tend to agree that it does not seem to be entirely enjoyable to use, particularly given the contortions and applications that have been seen in One Piece. It may not come with invulnerability, and so Nico can suffer similar injuries even if her limbs are elsewhere, but the Hana Hana no Mi still makes for an effective and bizarre Devil Fruit.
1. Tama Tama no Mi
Transforms Into Stages Of a Chicken
The Tama Tama no Miis a Zoan Devil Fruit that possesses the properties of both Zoan and Paramecia in many ways and is quite special. The user of this Devil Fruit Is none other than Baron Tamago. Using this Devil Fruit, Tamago gains the power of an egg. Simply put, if Tamago is defeated in battle and the egg is cracked, he then emerges as a chicken. He has two forms other than his egg form, and these are Viscount Hiyoko and Count Niwatori.
Of course, Count Niwatori is the strongest form and one that fans have not seen the full capabilities of. The fact that he possesses a 429 million bounty speaks for itself. Tamago is certainly a very strong member of the Big Mom Pirates and the faith that the Yonko has in him is certainly well-earned.
