Chelsea have had a great record in the league cup since the days when Jose Mourinho started his dynasty by winning that competition.
But in fact our good record goes back a lot further than that. As we’ve just found out thanks to one of our worst performances in the competition for a long time.
Sky Sports have just noted that tonight’s 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough is the first time the Blues have lost in the League Cup in 90 minutes since October 1999 – a full 25 years ago.
It was one of the flattest games we’ve seen in that time too. The Blues were handed 80% possession in that second half, and still managed to create very little.
It’s frankly amazing we’re in a semi final at all this season given how rubbish we’ve looked in two games against Championship opposition in the last 7 days. This team continues to plumb new depths and set new records – in a bad way.
