Man Utd has completed the recruitment of goalkeeper Andre Onana after he signed a 5-year contract with the option to extend for another year at Old Trafford.
Man Utd agreed a deal worth 51 million euros, plus 4 million euros in add-ons, with Inter earlier this week and Onana underwent a medical at Carrington yesterday (July 20).
Soon after, the Cameroonian goalkeeper flew to New York to join his new teammates on the club’s pre-season tour in the US.
Onana will replace David de Gea as Man Utd’s number 1 goalkeeper after the Spanish goalkeeper left the club on a free transfer last month. Coach Erik ten Hag knows Onana very well, the Cameroon international who played 145 matches at Ajax before moving to Inter, where he impressed in the Champions League final last month.
Onana said he is excited about the opportunity to work with Ten Hag again and wants to make his mark on the rich history of goalkeepers at Old Trafford.
“Joining Man Utd is a huge honor and I have worked hard to get to this moment, overcoming many obstacles on that journey,” Onana said.
“Stepping out onto the Old Trafford pitch to defend goal and contribute to the team will be another great experience. This is the start of a new journey for me, with new teammates and new ambitions to fight”.
“Man Utd has a long history of great goalkeepers, I will now give everything to create my own legacy in the years to come. I am very excited about the opportunity to continue working with Erik ten Hag and I can’t wait to contribute to the success I know he is determined to bring to this great football club .”
Man Utd’s director of football, John Murtough, said Onana is the first choice to start next season.
“Onana is our top choice to become Man Utd’s new goalkeeper, based on his technical profile and personality,” Murtough said.
“After Onana achieved success in his career, we knew that he would continue to complement the winning spirit we are building at the club. Onana is already one of the best goalkeepers in the world at 27 years old and we are confident that he can develop even more in the coming years.”
It is known that at Man Utd, Onana chose to wear shirt number 24. Thus, De Gea’s number 1 shirt left at Man Utd still has no owner.
