Raphael Varane cost Man Utd £500,000 per appearance as disastrous effects of transfer laid bare

MANCHESTER UNITED’S dodgy transfer record has been exposed again – by Raphael Varane costing them £500,000 per game.

The injury-hit £41million centre-back has confirmed he is leaving this summer after the Red Devils declined to extend his contract.

Since joining from Real Madrid in August 2021, Varane has played 93 matches for United but missed 41.

That”s highly-questionable value, not least as the Frenchman is a top earner at Old Trafford on around £350k a week.

It’s also a clear example of why the Red Devils’ minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants a new vision for transfers – starting at the end of the season.

Ratcliffe will demand better value for money as well as long-term planning.

Incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth will be a major part of that shake-up – amid suggestions boss Erik ten Hag’s future is still uncertain

Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo has emerged as a surprise candidate to replace Varane.

The uncapped 6ft 5ins Englishman, 26, was helped through the youth ranks at Manchester City by United’s new technical director Jason Wilcox.

TalkSPORT believe the Red Devils are keen to fend off Newcastle’s interest in Adarabioyo.

Meanwhile, Varane insists Old Trafford will always remain special to him.

He said in a video: “To you guys, supporters of Manchester United, it’s been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wearing that shirt.

“The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Man Utd player it was insane, the atmosphere was amazing.

“I fell in love with the club, with the fans. You have to play for Man Utd to understand what that represents.

“For my kids, it’s home here. It’s going to be a special place for me for life.”
