Russell Wilson gracefully welcomes Justin Fields, demonstrating the qualities of a true leader.

Russell Wilson has been around the league long enough to know that the quarterback position is among the most highly scrutinized in sports. While recent performances have left fans wondering if he’s still got it, few who’ve followed the NFL and Wilson’s historic career would argue that he lacks leadership. That said, it’s always of the utmost importance for the quarterback to voice his opinion and lead by example.

Justin Fields, former Chicago Bears quarterback, was traded to Pittsburgh over the weekend. This likely opens up the opportunity for a rookie from the draft—quite possibly Caleb Williams—to replace him. Fields comes to Pittsburgh with a strong albeit limited resume and a chip on his shoulder.

While this might seem threatening and a bit of a spoiler to someone who doesn’t know how these things work, a veteran like Wilson has played long enough to know this is nothing of the sort. He welcomed Fields to the team in a supportive tweet, which you can find below.

As any great leader knows, getting along with someone who comes in to challenge you and push you to the best of your ability is a must, and one must do so earnestly. Russell Wilson has always been a man of integrity, and at this point in his career, he’s looking to, of course, win more football games. At the same time, he knows he must also be willing to pass on guidance and support to those who will play the game well beyond him.

Wilson is showing up for himself, Fields, Mike Tomlin, and the Pittsburgh Steelers organization just as we’d expect him to. It’s the brotherhood and respect we’ve come to expect from him. It’s a great start to what many hope will be a resurgence for Wilson and his career.

Wilson remarked in the tweet excitement about the “QB room” he and Fields will be working out of next season. Under the tutelage of Mike Tomlin, with the backing of one of the most historic franchises and most loyal fanbases, something special could be cooking in Pittsburgh.

At this point in time, it’s not clear which quarterback will emerge as the starter, but to Wilson’s point, it’s a “QB room.” He could have said he looked forward to passing on wisdom and teaching. He could have even alluded to the fact that he would be starting. He did nothing of the sort.

Wilson and Fields will be in a battle this offseason, and the good news is the two men will help one another get better. In the end, that’s what leaders do.
