‘Fantastic player’… Shaun Wright-Phillips now claims £100m man would actually suit Chelsea

Shaun Wright-Phillips thinks Brentford striker Ivan Toney would suit his former club Chelsea.

Chelsea could make a move for Ivan Toney in January and Shaun Wright-Phillips has told The Sport Review that he would be a good fit for the Blues or their London rivals Arsenal.

If Chelsea are planning on signing the 27-year-old in the winter transfer transfer window, he will not come cheap.

According to Sky Sports, Brentford value their talisman at a whopping £100m.

It would not see the Blues smash their transfer record, though, after spending more than that on both Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

Ivan Toney would suit Chelsea

Wright-Phillips can get behind the idea of Chelsea signing Toney.

Speaking to The Sport Review, the former Blues winger said: “It’s a hard one because who’s going to get him? I heard Arsenal were interested and now Chelsea, so there might be a bit of a bidding war. I think he’s a fantastic player.

“I think he would suit both of them because he can offer them another dimension, and he’s also more of an out-and-out number nine who’s hungry for goals and very rarely misses penalties. If you give him a chance, he will put it in the back of the net. He would be a tremendous attribute for either of those teams.”

Why would Ivan Toney be a good fit for Chelsea?

Honestly, Toney would be a great match for most clubs in the Premier League. The England international is quite a traditional centre-forward, able to play with his back to goal and bully defenders.

Looking at the striker market right now, he is arguably the closest thing to Didier Drogba and Diego Costa, two No.9s who were able to thrive at Stamford Bridge partly because of their strength and physicality.

The most important thing, though, is that Toney is a forward who has proven that he can score goals, and that is what Chelsea need right now.

With Nicolas Jackson in good form, their need for a new striker does not look as dire as it did earlier in the season. The Senegal international has scored four goals in his last two games.

However, it is still quite risky to pin so much hope on a 22-year-old who has just moved to England and is yet to show that he can be a consistent goalscorer for the club.
