The Philadelphia Eagles’ musical trio is giving the queen of Christmas a run for her money!
Jason Kelce, Jordan Mailata, and Lane Johnson collaborated for their sophomore holiday release, A Philly Special Christmas Special, available on Dec. 1, and the album includes some surprise voices, including Patti LaBelle and Jason’s brother, Travis Kelce.
Among the songs on the album — a follow-up to their A Philly Special Christmas album from last year — is the NFL stars’ take on Mariah Carey’s beloved Christmas classic, “All I Want for Christmas is You,” and fans can hear the full song now.
Mailata, 26, was the guest on Jason and Travis’s weekly podcast, New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce, this week, where he shared some insight into the recording process with his teammate.
“We got to see the creation of the songs more this year than we did last year, and I’m going to take that with me forever,” Mailata said on the episode.
Jason agreed, adding, “I’m right there with you, and I think that me, you and Lane get put on the face of the album, but there are so many musicians.”
“It’s really fun watching that go from nothing to something.”
Travis lent his voice to a duet with Jason for the album, but the Kansas City Chiefs star said he hasn’t listened to the final version of his song yet.Jason Kelce, Travis Kelce. TIM NWACHUKWU/GETTY, COOPER NEILL/GETTY
“Dude I do not want to hear myself sing like that. I’ve got more of the rock voice,” Travis explained, before his brother compared his voice to Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger’s.
When LaBelle recorded a collaboration with Mailata, the Eagles tackle said it was “nerve-wracking” to sing “in front of a great” like LaBelle.
Mailata has been singing since he was young, and in an interview with ABC 6 this week, he said, “Music was my first love before sports.”
However, Jason told listeners that Mailata is “very talented” musically, and has even “been teaching himself banjo in the locker room” this season.
Travis gave the album rave reviews on the episode, and said it as “really unique and really cool” to watch the project come to life. “Hats off to you guys,” he added.
