Anne Hathaway isn’t a fan of her first name.
The Locked Down star appeared on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night in which she admitted she wasn’t comfortable when people called her by her given name.
“Let’s spill the tea. When I was 14 years old I filmed a commercial and I had to get my SAG card and they asked me, ‘What do you want your name to be?’” Hathaway, 38, told host Jimmy Fallon.
“I’m like, ‘Well it should be my name, my name is Anne Hathaway,’” she recalled. “That seemed like the right choice but it never occurred to me that for the rest of my life people would call me Anne.”
She continued, “The only person who calls me Anne is my mother, and she only does it when she’s really mad at me, like really mad. So every time I step out in public and someone calls my name, I think they’re going to yell at me. People are like, ‘Anne!’ And I’m like, ‘What? What did I do?’”
The Devil Wears Prada star said throughout the years her famous costars have taken to calling her a number of nicknames.
“People are so lovely, they don’t want to be presumptuous, and so I think they come up with workarounds on set because the truth is nobody’s comfortable calling me Anne ever,” she said. “It doesn’t fit. I’m an Annie. People call me ‘Miss H,’ people call me ‘Hath,’ so feel free, call me anything but Anne.”
Hathaway later played “Best, Worst or First” with Fallon and had to answer the question last concerning her first celebrity crush.
“Leonardo DiCaprio, come on,” she immediately said, later adding that her crush on Eddie Vedder was also “around the same time.”
But when Fallon asked which era of DiCaprio she crushed on, Hathaway got the name of his ’80s sitcom a little confused.
“He was on that show for a while, Who’s the Boss?” Hathaway said at first before Fallon corrected her. “No, Growing Pains! I don’t remember, I just remember being like, ‘Hiii, who’s that?!’”
Hathaway stars in Locked Down alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor as a pair pulling off a jewelry heist. It premieres on HBO Max on Thursday.
