Elizabeth Olsen’s return as the Scarlet Witch in the MCU’s Agatha: Darkhold Diaries may have been accidentally confirmed by another returning actor.
One returning MCU actor might have accidentally revealed that Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will be returning in 2024’s Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, Marvel Studios’ first WandaVision spinoff. Elizabeth Olsen has portrayed Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch, since the post-credits scene of 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but Phase 4 marked her first dedicated MCU project opposite Paul Bettany’s Vision in WandaVision on Disney+. The 2021 series began to showcase Wanda Maximoff’s transition into a powerful new MCU villain, which was explored further in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, though the Doctor Strange sequel also seemed to mark the end of the Scarlet Witch’s dramatic MCU journey.
At the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, America Chavez showed the Scarlet Witch the error of her ways, facing her with the fact that the Darkhold, the MCU’s Book of the Damned, had transformed her into a monster. In an attempt at redemption, Wanda Maximoff destroyed the castle on Mount Wundagore with her inside it, seemingly marking her tragic demise. Despite her apparent death, many expect the Scarlet Witch to return in the MCU’s future, with some considering Marvel Studios’ first WandaVision spinoff, 2024’s Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, to be the perfect opportunity to bring Maximoff back to the MCU, and this may have already been confirmed.
During a recent exchange on Instagram that has since been deleted, comedian and actor Asif Ali responded “Yes!” to a question asking whether Wanda Maximoff would be in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. Ali portrayed Abilash Tandon, a.k.a. Norm, in WandaVision, and was confirmed to be returning in the cast of Agatha: Darkhold Diaries in January 2023 alongside several other residents of Westview, New Jersey. The fact that Ali deleted his post shortly after this exchange suggests he may have revealed something that wasn’t supposed to be shared, perhaps confirming that Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will be making an appearance in the upcoming Phase 5 series.
What Elizabeth Olsen Has Said About Scarlet Witch’s Return
Despite being asked repeatedly about her potential involvement with Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, Elizabeth Olsen has been steadfast in her response that she wouldn’t be returning. Speaking in 2022 on Good Morning America, Olsen declared that she is “not appearing in it,” but that she’d “do anything with [Kathryn] Hahn.” In a later interview with ET Online, Olsen responded with a staunch “no,” but suggested that she’d “love to pop up.” Olsen has spoken since about how the break from Marvel Studios has been good for her, citing her desire to build up other characters away from the Scarlet Witch, though this doesn’t rule out an eventual return to the MCU.
Where Else Scarlet Witch Could Return (& How)
Although the Scarlet Witch’s return in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries is yet to be officially confirmed, there are several other upcoming projects that could feature Wanda Maximoff. WandaVision’s second spinoff, Vision Quest, could reunite Wanda and Vision, while the Scarlet Witch’s involvement in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could also mean her return in Marvel Studios’ potential Doctor Strange 3. Phase 5’s supernaturally-focused Blade could also bring the witch back, while Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars are expected to feature many returning MCU heroes. There have also been rumors of a solo Scarlet Witch film being produced for the MCU, though Marvel Studios has provided no comment.
