Straight Outta Compton proved that we really can’t get enough of rap biopics and it looks like HBO is banking on us wanting to know more about Dr. Dre’s mogul phase.
The network announced today that they will release a four-part documentary miniseries called The Defiant Ones about the bond between Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, two men who rose from lower-class beginnings to become powerful music business CEOs, and togethere founded Dr. Dre’s ultimate payday in Beats Electronics.
“The Defiant Ones has everything you expect in a great story — drama and humor, tragedy and triumph,” said HBO programming President Casey Bloys in a press release. “Allen Hughes takes you on a journey through some of the most important flash points of popular culture, and I’m delighted that we can bring this unforgettable saga to our viewers.”
Hughes — best known for directing Menace II Society — followed Dre and Iovine for three years to make the documentary. He also scored interviews with musical heavyweights like Bono, Eminem, Nas, Trent Reznor, Bruce Springsteen and Snoop Dogg and was handed a load of archival never-before-seen studio footage featuring everyone from Eazy-E to Stevie Nicks. To hear HBO tell it, the resulting documentary is “an epic look at America” that is also “a master class in how to work your way up from the bottom to beyond your wildest dreams.”
