Conor McGregor reaffirms love for controversial Power Slap league after watching middleweight war

Conor McGregor continues to express his love for the controversial sport of slap fighting despite the fact it often faces heavy criticism.

Dana White’s Power Slap promotion returned on Wednesday with an exciting card headlined by two super heavyweights who weigh more than 58 stone combined.

However, it was a middleweight match-up that caught McGregor’s attention.

“I’m a fan of this, I don’t care,” McGregor wrote on his Instagram story alongside highlights of Eddie ‘Spaghetti’ Brahimir’s fight with Chris Branden ‘The Butcher’ Bordeaux.

The 25-year-old Brahimir won the coin toss and elected to slap first, but despite being wobbled Bordeaux managed to stay upright and continue competing.

Bordeaux returned with a shot that seemed to really bother his opponent and prompt the UFC CEO to say, “Holy s***, I don’t know if that kid can take two of those.”

He managed to take two more, and so did his opponent, before the fight went to the scorecards and Bordeaux was declared the winner by unanimous decision.

McGregor first revealed he was a fan of slap fighting in January when he sent a congratulatory message to the new RXF heavyweight slap fighting champion, Sorin Comsa.

Soon after, the former dual-weight champion took to social media to offer Power Slap contestants tips for success after watching White’s first slap fighting event.

“If anything, power slap is showing the importance of turning back your shoulder and torquing your torso into the shot,” McGregor tweeted.

“’Turning of the hip’ potentially the wrong terminology being used. Hips less important? Possible also. Turn your shoulder back and torque fully into strike! K.O.

“Stabilize the hips. Turn the shoulder. Torque the torso. KO! Where’s my belts and my cash. Yup the Keano fella hahahaja! Classic… You talkin’ to the king of KO’s.”

‘Notorious’ even suggested he wants to commentate on the sport, he added: “I could potentially be the Joe Rogan of Power Slap.”

Since then, McGregor has been focusing on returning to MMA for the first time since breaking his leg during a trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021.

The 35-year-old is expected to face lightweight contender Michael Chandler during the first half of 2024, but it’s currently unclear exactly when or where their clash will take place.

For now, he’s entertaining himself by watching Power Slap highlights.
