The Dragon Ball Super manga is about to hit an exciting milestone, with fans of the series able to get a sneak peek of the latest chapter for a limited time.

Showcased in full as part of the February super-sized edition of V Jump, this chapter involves the climax of an epic battle from the latest Dragon Ball Super movie. The fight scene can currently be previewed through the official Dragon Ball website, with readers able to get a glimpse of the early storyboard drafts of the manga. The sneak peek shows Gohan in his Gohan Beast form, with the powerful young Saiyan unleashing his version of Piccolo’s iconic Special Beam Cannon attack.

The current story arc in the Dragon Ball Super manga adapts the events of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero anime movie. This film focused primarily on Gohan and Piccolo as they fought against two new Androids that were created by the surviving remnants of the Red Ribbon Army. The greatest threat, however, was Cell Max — a new, more powerful version of the villain that Gohan had defeated several years beforehand. This callback made Gohan’s struggle against the foe even more epic in the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie, as Cell was the first major villain that Gohan defeated on his own. It was initially meant to transition him to becoming the franchise’s protagonist, although Goku eventually returned to that role.

Unlike previous movies in the franchise, the Dragon Ball Super films are canon with the anime series. Likewise, the manga has begun adapting the events of these movies in its own way, making them truly congruent with the source material. This has even seen the modern version of the popular movie character Broly brought into the manga, although the full events of his most recent film were not adapted into a separate story arc. The storyboard for the 100th chapter will only be available online for a week, with the February issue of V Jump being published in about a month.

Launching in 2015, the Dragon Ball Super manga ushered in the grand return of the iconic franchise. The original manga (which also contained the content that was adapted as the separate Dragon Ball Z anime) ended 20 years prior, in 1995. The series also returned in animated form through the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods, with this relaunch attributed to the negative reception toward the live-action Hollywood adaptation Dragonball: Evolution.

While franchise creator Akira Toriyama returned to write the series, Toyotarou now provides all the manga art. There was also a Dragon Ball Super anime that ran from 2015 to 2018. So far, there are currently no plans to revive that series. However, since the release of the Dragon Ball Super manga and anime, the franchise has found a new generation of fans and regained its status as a premiere anime/manga multimedia franchise.
