Mariah Carey Breaks Her Tie With Harry Styles With Another Week At No. 1

As Christmas draws closer, holiday tunes are quickly becoming more popular on the Billboard charts, with many appearing to be all but unstoppable. This week, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” claims the No. 1 spot on one ranking, making history as it rules once again.

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” holds at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, the chart company’s namesake ranking of the most-consumed songs in the world. The tune has now ruled the all-genre list for three weeks in a row this year, and now it’s broken an all-time record with one more turn atop the tally.

Carey’s holiday smash has earned 16 stays at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 throughout the past few years. That now stands as the most frames spent atop the chart since its introduction in 2020, according to Billboard.

Before this week, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was tied with Harry Styles’ “As It Was” as the longest-running No. 1 hit in the history of the Billboard Global 200. Now, Carey has passed the former One Direction star, securing her spot in the history books.

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” has been steadily adding to its total weeks spent at No. 1 each year. “As It Was” didn’t have the same chance to behave that way on the chart. Instead, it spent much of 2022 on the throne of the ranking as a massive smash single before slowly working its way down the list.

This week, Carey’s smash gained the most ground in sales, selling another 12,000 copies globally in the prior tracking period. The track was also streamed more than 102 million times.

As “All I Want for Christmas Is You” maintains its No. 1 position on the Billboard Global 200, it also returns to the summit on the Hot 100. While Carey is usually the only artist with a holiday hit to control the U.S.-based chart during the Christmas season, 2023 turned out to be a bit different. Brenda Lee kicked off the jolliest time of the year with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” finally controlling the Hot 100 this year, 65 years after its first release.
