Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel does not seem to be too impressed with the effort players at his former club are currently putting in.
While John Obi Mikel praised Conor Gallagher on The Obi One Podcast for giving everything and fighting for the club, the former midfielder claimed that no one else in Chelsea‘s squad is really doing that right now.
Gallagher has been a key player for Mauricio Pochettino‘s side this season, with Glenn Murray going as far as to say he is “irreplaceable”.
However, the Blues could actually allow him to depart Stamford Bridge as his contract continues to run down.
According to The Independent, Chelsea could sell Gallagher this month for £50m amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
Conor Gallagher fighting for the Chelsea badge
Mikel feels that Gallagher is the only Chelsea player fighting for the club right now.
On the midfielder, he said: “He gives his all, he is running, he is tackling. He is giving 110%. Conor is the one player I will single out and say he is fighting for the badge. Apart from Conor, I would say there is nobody else really.”
The numbers would suggest that Gallagher is definitely going out there each week to fight for his club.
According to the Premier League’s official website, the Englishman has committed 47 fouls this season, the most in the division.
Gallagher is also making 1.4 interceptions per game, which is the highest average in Chelsea’s squad (WhoScored), as he tries to stop opposition attacks.
The England international may not be the flashiest player at Stamford Bridge, but as Mikel mentioned, he is certainly someone who has been fighting for the club this term. Can you say the same about all of his team-mates? Chelsea’s league position would suggest no.
