Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is said to be building a sprawling complex on Kauai, the oldest island in Hawaii, with a unique blend of luxury and survival elements.
Specifically, the land containing the Kualoa Ranch farm is about 607 hectares large, with a public beach. In December 2023, Wired reported that Zuckerberg plans to build a large complex here, including a 464 square meter “doomsday bunker”.
The bunker’s design incorporated a metal door filled with concrete, a feature commonly found in shelters and bomb shelters. The basement also has its own energy and food supply.
In addition to the bunker, Zuckerberg’s complex will include more than 30 bedrooms and bathrooms, two mansions connected by a tunnel to the bunker, and dozens of treehouses connected by rope bridges.
The project reflects the growing trend of doomsday preparation among Silicon Valley’s elite.
Wired estimates construction will cost CEO Meta about $100 million, in addition to the $170 million previously spent on land purchases.
Zuckerberg bought a 283-hectare piece of land on the Hawaiian island of Kauai in 2014 for $100 million, Forbes said. In 2021, he bought another 242 hectares of land, and another piece of land also on Kauai, 44 hectares wide.
Zuckerberg’s land purchase on Kauai has come under scrutiny due to its impact on local residents. According to NBC, he was criticized for suing people to sell the land their grandparents left behind. In 2017, CEO Meta apologized and withdrew the lawsuit.
