Luffy unleashed his powerful attack, Dawn Gatling, against Saturn in One Piece.
Luffy is an incredibly powerful pirate in the New World currently and one of the Emperors of the Sea. After defeating Kaido, he reached a completely new level of strength, such that he earned himself a bounty of 3 billion berries. Luffy accomplished this great feat by Awakening his Devil fruit and gaining the power of Gear 5.
As fans know already, Gear 5 is the strongest ability that Luffy has up his sleeve, and it strengthens him greatly, raising his attack power incredibly at the same time. While Gear 5 has not made its way into the story too many times just yet, fans have already got to witness some of the most incredible fights with Luffy using this power. Most recently, he used this power in his battle against Saint Saturn of the Five Elders, and he demonstrated a completely new technique, called Dawn Gatling.
What Is Dawn Gatling?
Dawn Gatling is a powerful technique that Luffy utilized in his battle against Saint Jaygarcia Saturn of the Five Elders. This technique was used by Luffy shortly after entering Gear 5. The first thing Luffy did when he entered Gear 5 was hit Kizaru and blow him away from his path. As soon as he did that, Bonney got to witness Gear 5 for the first time and drew the connection between Luffy and Nika. Bonney then told Luffy that she had been waiting for him the entire time, to which Luffy responded by saying that he has been by her side all this time.
At the same time, Bonney asked Luffy’s help in taking down Saturn and paying him back for injuring Vega punk. Luffy agreed to this request and not only did he pay Saturn back for what he did to Vegapunk, but also demonstrated the powers of his Devil Fruit to Bonney, who has the ability to utilize rubber powers as well. That is precisely when fans saw Gomu Gomu no Dawn Gatling for the very first time.
Essentially, this technique sees Luffy make use of the inflation powers of Gear 5. Luffy winds up his fists in a way to build momentum, and once that is done, he coats his arms with the Color of Armament and throws a powerful Gatling at his enemies. Given that Luffy is in Gear 5, he does not need to pump air into his fist to inflate them. He can simply do that without any inflation and control rubber as he likes. As such, Luffy can easily throw a high-speed Gatling and inflate it at the very last moment, causing significant damage to his enemies. That is precisely what he did to Saturn and the power was such that he was blown away right from the center of Egghead all the way to the very edge.
The Strength Of Dawn Gatling
Dawn Gatling is a very powerful technique that Luffy utilized to crush Saturn. It makes use of the power of inflation, which means that Luffy is using the strength of a giant to crush his enemies here. It is also possible that Dawn Gatling could be seeing the use of Gear Four style abilities as well. Usually, in Gear 4, Luffy inflates his muscles, while in Gear Third, he inflates his bones. That is the primary difference between these two Gears. Looking at Dawn Gatling, it appears that it sees usage of Gear Third style powers primarily, however, on a much bigger scale. Yet, it is possible that muscle inflation is also at work here, although that cannot be said for sure.
Regardless, this technique is very strong, given that it was able to blow away Saint Saturn, one of the Five Elders, completely away. It must be remembered that Saturn is an incredibly powerful individual himself and his Devil Fruit ability is nothing short of mesmerizing. Saturn’s strength is quite high as well, as he was able to injure Luffy by merely looking at him, making him cough up blood in the process. This is an indication of the fact that Saturn himself is very powerful. The fact that Dawn Gatling was enough to blow him away to the edge of the island suggests that it is clearly a very powerful technique. It certainly did crack a few bones in his skull and made him cough up blood.
However, this technique was not strong enough to put him down, as he got up and healed from his injuries, as if he wasn’t even injured in the first place.
Where Does Dawn Gatling Rank Among Luffy’s Strongest Techniques?
When ranking Dawn Gatling among Luffy’s strongest techniques, it is certainly up there with the very best, however, a proper ranking requires one to dissect what Luffy can and can’t do. First of all, the tiers of Luffy’s strongest attacks need to be assigned. The highest tier would include the attacks that are used in Gear 5 and are powered with both Armament and Conqueror’s Haki. This would include attacks such as Bajrang Gun, and White Star Gun. Then come the attacks that, although very strong, do not have the Color of the Supreme King infused into them. This would include the likes of Dawn Gatling, Mogura Pistol, Dawn Whip, or Dawn Stamp, among others. Then there are techniques that Luffy uses with his Gear Fourth, coated in Conqueror’s and Armament Haki.
Given that Luffy was able to deal significantly more damage to Kaido in Gear 5 even without using Conqueror’s Haki, one can assume that this form is far superior to Gear 4 with Haki. At the same time, Luffy utilized the power of Dawn Whip on Lucci, and this technique was so powerful that it almost knocked out the CP0 member, who, as it must be remembered, is currently fighting against Zoro on an equal footing despite him being a user of the King of Hell Three Sword Style. Dawn Gatling is certainly much, much stronger than Dawn Whip, which implies that this is one of Luffy’s strongest attacks, capable of one-shotting an enemy far stronger than even a Yonko first Commander.
This would make it Luffy’s third strongest attack in Gear 5, only behind Bajrang Gun and White Star Gun. Undoubtedly, Dawn Gatling is a very powerful technique and one that Luffy will most likely utilize often in the series, especially since Gatling attacks are one of his signature techniques.
At the same time, it must be remembered that Saturn tanking a powerful attack such as this one is very impressive, even though a simple Dawn whip was able to almost knock out Lucci. Meanwhile, Saturn was able to take the brunt of this attack and get back up as if he wasn’t even touched. Clearly, being able to take this attack head-on and get back up as if nothing happened just goes to show once again that Saturn is on the same level as the elites of the One Piece world, if not higher.
