Tyson Fury‘s nutritionist George Lockhart has been adding extra garlic to the Gypsy King’s meals to help with the cut above his right eye, claiming ‘food is key for recovery and injuries of that nature’.
Lockhart – who shares the responsibility of Fury’s food intake alongside Greg Marriott – says the garlic will help ‘kill off bacteria and germs within the cut’ making it heal faster than usual.
Lockhart also highlighted the importance of micro-nutrient-rich foods such as spinach, carrots and onions before explaining how red meats were vital to increasing the Gypsy King’s iron intake.
The nutritionist – who also works alongside Joseph Parker – went on to discuss Fury’s calorie intake, stating he would have to eat more than usual as the ‘body burns more calories’ while trying to heal.
Lockhart is not naive and says food won’t solve everything, but claims it has a huge impact over time in terms of recovery and injuries of that nature. However, he states ‘time is the most important thing’.

Fury’s highly-anticipated bout with Oleksandr Usyk had been scheduled to take place in Riyadh on February 17 but was postponed after the Gypsy King sustained an injury during camp.
Fury, 35, suffered a severe cut above his right eye while sparring Croatian heavyweight Argon Smakici on February 2 during his training camp in the Saudi Arabian capital.
The injury, which was described as a ‘freak cut’ by members of his team, required multiple stitches, with the Gypsy King’s former cutman, Jorge Capetillo, stating it could take 90 days to heal.
Lockhart says the rearranged date of May 18 is ‘close’ for a cut of his magnitude but insists the Gypsy King will do everything in his power to ensure he is fit and read for the undisputed title fight in Saudi Arabia.
Lockhart believes Fury will be a contributing factor to the healing process. He told Betway: ‘High protein helps massively as the body needs to recover, rebuild and repair itself. Lots of protein, lots of water and fluid, and while it’s not sexy that is the type of foods that will help recover a bad cut.
‘A lot of red meats and stuff with iron in it. Not just meats but things with a lot of micro-nutrients in it, including garlic, spinach, carrots, onion, and mix everything together.
‘Garlic is a great source to help you recover quickly as it kills off bacteria and germs in a cut. Like I said red meat is the key source of protein. I’m not one of those nutritionists which says food will solve everything, but it has a huge impact over time in terms of recovery and injuries of that nature, but the most important thing is time.
The Gypsy King’s S&C coach Kristian Blacklock said Fury was in the best shape of his life ahead of the Usyk fight – claiming he was ‘stronger and learner’ than ever before
‘The doctor said that the cut will heal in three weeks. People don’t realise that the normal person is fine with a cut like this but if you’re going to get punched in the face, it will take a long time. Even May is close for this fight to be happening but I know he wants to take care of business so I think he will get it done.
‘A lot of people don’t realise that when you are injured, your body burns more calories because it is putting a lot more effort in recovering and help with whatever injury it is, including a cut.
‘Healing a cut and a sprained ankle though are two different things. For inflammation, fish such as wild salmon and omega 3 are key sources of nutrition to overcome an injury like a sprained ankle. You actually need to stay away from red meats and Omega 6.’
There is no doubt Fury will be looking to utilise food for his recovery, but he will be reluctant to put on too much weight after working hard on his physique ahead of the undisputed title fight.
The Gypsy King’s S&C coach Kristian Blacklock said Fury was in the best shape of his life ahead of the Usyk fight which was penned for February 17 – claiming the British boxer was ‘stronger and learner’ than ever before.
Meanwhile, Fury – who shared a picture of his slimmed down physique on Instagram – said the Ukrainian heavyweight would have been in ‘trouble’ if the bout went ahead as planned.
Fury shared his body transformation online after the postponement was announced, posting a photo of himself standing in front of the mirror during his camp in Saudi Arabia.
The Gypsy King looked considerably leaner than when he fought against former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in October 2023.
Fury – who told Mail Sport he would always be fat during an interview ahead of the Ngannou fight – could be seen with abs as he tensed in the mirror selfie.

Fury and his team took to social media after the postponement was announced to say they were devastated given the work they had put in behind the scenes
Fury wrote the following caption alongside the picture posted on Friday: ‘I can’t help getting injured in sparring but what I can say was Usyk was in trouble.’
He went on to add: ‘I am in fantastic shape. I will reschedule soon as I can. 2024 a massive year for team GK.’
Fury’s S&C coach, Blacklock, replied: ‘As a team we had Tyson Fury in the best shape of his life as we quietly worked away, stronger, leaner but we will be ready when the fight is rearranged.’
Fury is adamant he will arrive at the new date, May 18, in the same shape.
