Pop sensation Britney Spears had her social media followers fretting as she appeared to be crying in a series of photographs, with mascara running down her cheeks

Britney Spears left her fans worried for her after she appeared to be crying in her latest slew of Instagram snaps.

The Toxic hitmaker, 42, wore nothing but a silk nightgown as she stared up into the camera, with mascara rivulets pooling around her eyes in what appeared to be tear tracks.

Other fans noticed some dark shadows around Britney’s left wrist which they took to be bruises.

Britney went braless under the pastel pink lacy gown, showing off a hint of nipple as she let her wavy blonde hair fall around her shoulders.

Despite her apparent tears, Britney gave the lens a tiny grin, matching up her look with a matte pink lipstick and elegant pendant necklace.

The new snaps appeared to show a different angle of the star’s living room than she usually shows off in her dancing videos, with a plush grey couch and matching carpet visible behind her.

Worried fans, however, weren’t thinking much about the decor as they flocked to the comments section.

One penned: “Why do you look like you have been crying? Same PJs and different house. Something is strange.”

They went on to beg: “Wear a white scrunchie in your hair next video if you’re not okay.”

Another said: “Sad eyes and bruising on her wrists?” while a third agreed: “Why is there bruising on her wrist?”

Someone else was even wondering if it was the real Britney, as they said: “If you zoom in on her face, this pic’s weird. Is this really Britney?”

However, others leapt to Britney’s defence and argued she is finally free to post her own content, with one writing: “The queen is serving!”
