Understanding Starlight’s Motivation: Erin Moriarty Discusses Why Her Character Won’t Seek Leadership in The Boys Season 4.

Exclusive: Erin Moriarty hints that Starlight may struggle with her positions in The Boys and The Seven as well as a possible leadership position in season 4.

Erin Moriarty hints that in The Boys season 4, Starlight will be split between two factions because it appears that she has abandoned the Supes gang. The young Supe in Season 3 of the Prime Video series went through some of her most intense emotional anguish to date. Her attempt to murder Homelander and turn The Seven into a better version of himself failed, and her friendship with Jack Quaid’s character Hughie was strained by his use of Temp-V to battle other Supes. After assisting in the defeat of Soldier Boy and putting a momentary halt to Homelander, Starlight made the decision at the end of the season to leave The Seven and join The Boys.

Erin Moriarty was questioned about her thoughts on the much awaited The Boys season 4 during an interview with Screen Rant at the BoxLunch Gala. In response to a question about whether Starlight will seek to become the leader of either The Seven or the titular vigilante group, Moriarty hinted at the character’s internal conflict and lack of desire to assume a leadership role in either organization, stating that her main goal is to be in a position to “impart the most change.” View Moriarty’s sharing below:

“First of all, I think for her, it’s not about leadership. Actually, I do believe that. I think it’s about taking whatever position she can, assessing it, and really trying to make sure that she’s in a position where she can impart the most change, or make the biggest impact. I think that leadership component comes into play more so because, Butcher is trying to be the leader, Homelander is trying to be the leader. Right?

Those are the ones that are trying to be the leaders. I don’t think she’s trying to be just any of those leaders arbitrarily to be the leader, I think she is trying to assess who the rightful leader is, because that person has a trickle-down effect. So I think, whether it would be her, or someone else, I don’t think it matters as long as she feels that it’s right. I think that’s a pretty integral part of her role, is that arbitrary leadership is not only not productive, but harmful.”

What To Expect From Starlight In The Boys Season 4

It is presently unknown if Starlight will truly continue to be away from The Seven at the start of The Boys season 4, despite the fact that she prominently joined the vigilante anti-Supes gang. Vought has a history of retracting its own public remarks in an attempt to preserve their impeccable public image. As a result, it is possible that they may retract the smear campaign that claimed her resignation was the result of a fictitious split with Homelander. In addition, The Boys would prefer an insider to have the upper hand over Vought, as Queen Maeve is no longer a member of The Seven following her de-power.

Nevertheless, the fourth season teaser for The Boys seems to tease a conflict between Homelander and Starlight, with irate demonstrators brandishing anti-Starlight placards. She may continue to be an anomaly among The Seven, especially because Homelander intends to utilize his newfound fame for a political campaign. In this case, the vigilante gang will need to find another way to obtain information on Vought. In the past, Moriarty did provide a hint that suggested it was doubtful that she would be reconnecting with The Seven:

“Oh my God, okay I’m sorry it’s just, maybe this is just a good advertisement for Season 4, that I can’t answer that without maintaining composure. I can’t! No that’s my earnest response! I’m actually scared to answer … She is adjusting great.”

Prior to The Boys season 4, Starlight’s friendship with Hughie will be another important area of focus. Even if she didn’t fully reconcile with him at the conclusion of season 3, her worries over his usage of Temp-V may still be a major source of tension going into the next one, given that Karl Urban’s Butcher still seems to be addicted to the drug’s effects while being aware of its health hazards. If Butcher manages to persuade Hughie to retake the medicine or if a less lethal variation of it emerges, the pair could find themselves at odds once more.
