Get ready for more Matrix.
The Hollywood Reporter and Variety reported Wednesday that Warner Bros. has a new film in the futuristic franchise coming soon, written and directed by Drew Goddard, who made 2011’s The Cabin in the Woods and 2018’s Bad Times at the El Royale.
The original Matrix movie — and its iconic blue and red pills — came out 25 years ago in 1999, directed by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski. Lana will be an executive producer on the new film, per the outlets.
Past Matrix films starred Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who both reprised their roles most recently in 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections.
It’s currently unclear which of the former cast members will return for the new installment, and its plot details remain under wraps.

Goddard earned an Oscar nomination for writing 2015’s The Martian. The director, who has also written movies like Cloverfield and World War Z plus for TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, said in a statement shared by THR, “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life.”
“Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”

Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman said Goddard pitched a “new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”
Added Ehrman, “The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making his new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
