Lewis Hamilton showcased his distinct sense of style by going shirtless inside a long pinstripe Dior coat at the GQ Global Creativity Awards in New York on Thursday.
The Formula One driver, 39, wore a piece from the 2024 Fall/Winter collection while attending an event honoring the ‘world’s most bold and inspiring creatives’.
Lewis paired the ensemble with a diamond chain that emphasized the coat’s silver beaded design at the waist and black slacks.
He was in his element as he posed on the purple carpet before taking the stage later in the evening to accept an award.
It comes after the Formula One ace revealed this week that he was given a role in the Hollywood star’s 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.
The sequel to the classic 1986 film, starring Tom as Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, made $1.496 billion worldwide and is largely credited with lifting Hollywood out of the financial quagmire caused by COVID-19 and the global epidemic.
However, Lewis passed up an opportunity due to conflicting schedules, as the Mercedes driver declined a cameo appearance.
Speaking with GQ, he admitted to asking for a role in the film years before principal photography began, when Cruise first mentioned a potential sequel.
I said, “Dude, if you ever do Top Gun 2, I’ll be a janitor. “Just let me be in it,” he recalls.
Despite Hamilton’s weak acting abilities, the good-natured Cruise presented him to the film’s director, Joseph Kosinski, but the driver quickly realized he couldn’t commit.
‘First of all, I hadn’t even taken an acting class,’ he explained. And I don’t want to be the one to let this film down.
‘And, secondly, I simply didn’t have the time to devote to it. I remember having to tell Joe and Tom—and it shattered my heart.
He said, ‘And then I regretted it, course, when they show me the movie and it’s: “It could’ve been me!”‘
Lewis made the revelation after storming out of an interview in the paddock following his ninth-place finish at the Japanese Grand Prix.
The seven-time world champion’s difficulties continued as he scored only two points, his lowest start to a Formula One season yet.
Following the early red light caused by Alex Albon and Daniel Ricciardo’s crash, Mercedes went with a daring tyre strategy, while Hamilton and George Russell attempted a one-stop plan after the restart.
They returned to two-stops when Hamilton insisted over the team radio, ‘Change the strategy.’
After the race, a reporter questioned if he was jealous of Ferrari, the team he will drive for next year, which finished third and fourth with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.
