The twins, Alfredo and Aylisn, were welcomed into the world with great enthusiasm by their parents, Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo. Their daughter Aylisn was born at midnight on New Year’s Day, while their son Alfredo was born at 11:45 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. The first child born in Monterey County and at Natividad Medical Center in 2022, Aylisn, weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces, while Alfredo, her bigger brother, weighed 6 pounds, 1 ounce.

Although twins being born on different dates is not unheard of, it is extremely unusual for twins to be born in different years. When asked about this extraordinary turn of events, Madrigal said, “It’s crazy to me that they’re twins and have different birthdays. She arrived at midnight, and I was relieved and delighted.

Although more than 3% of all births or around 120,000 sets of twins occur in the United States each year, twins with separate birthdays that span two different years are still incredibly rare. Both the parents and the obstetrician in charge of giving birth to these twins on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day felt excitement because of how unusual this event was.

Dr. Ana Abril Arias, a family doctor at Natividad medical Group and a faculty member at Natividad, recounted the thrill of this special delivery. She expressed, “This was definitely one of the most memorable deliveries of my career. It was a real pleasure to assist these little ones in safely arriving in 2021 and 2022. What a fantastic way to ring in the New Year!”

The twins Alfredo and Aylisn will soon join their three elder siblings, a mix of two girls and a boy, back at their family home in Greenfield, Monterey County. Madrigal, a mother of three already, expressed the family’s excitement at the arrival of the twins and revealed that her eldest son was ecstatic about being a big brother to a newborn brother in the family. As they set off on this amazing adventure together, the family’s excitement for the twins’ impending arrival and the prospect of fresh starts is evident.
