Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen presented Pole Position Award by Brazilian icon and PES legend Adriano

Max Verstappen claimed pole position in a storm-hit qualifying session ahead of Sunday’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix before receiving his award from footballing cult hero Adriano.

The recently crowned three-time Formula 1 world champion will be eyeing his 17th race win of what has been a remarkable season.

Verstappen secured his third consecutive title by finishing second in the Qatar Grand Prix sprint race at the beginning of October.

He currently sits 251 points clear of Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez at the top of the Drivers’ Championship with three races left.

The 26-year-old could very well extend his lead this weekend as he prepares to start from the front of the grid in Brazil.

Verstappen finished ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll in adverse weather conditions to win the Pole Position Award.

On hand to present him with his trophy was former Inter Milan striker Adriano, a two-time Serie A champion who won 48 caps for Brazil and starred in their 2004 Copa America triumph.

He is also remembered as one of the most overpowered players on the Pro Evolution Soccer 2006 video game, making him a hit amongst fans worldwide.

Adriano’s appearance at the Grand Prix was certainly well received on social media, with one fan on X saying: “That is some crossover.”

“Love how he’s wearing an Inter shirt. Legend of the club,” added another, with the 41-year-old donning this season’s home kit.

With a laughing emoji, a third said: “Kids nowadays will never understand how dangerous Adriano’s 99 shot power was.”

“The crossover we never knew we needed,” a fourth added as fans saw F1 and football join forces.

Meanwhile this user simply stated: “Streets won’t forget Adriano.”

Heavy rain and an electrical storm in Sao Paulo saw officials wave the red flag with four minutes remaining in qualifying.

Saturday’s sprint race will hand Verstappen another chance to add more points to his tally, with the 2023 season drawing to a close.
