Like other Dragon Ball characters, Beerus and Whis’s names are both puns.
Dragon Ball Super introduced a series of new characters to Dragon Ball fans . Two of them are the God of Destruction Beerus and the Angel Whis .
Whis and Beerus are characters originally created by Toriyama for the film Battle of the Gods . There, Goku and Beerus face each other in an exciting battle. Goku also achieved the transformation into a Super Saiyan God , taking him to a completely different level of power than what fans imagined the power a Saiyan could achieve.
In Toriyama ‘s style , the character names are all based on puns from Japanese, revolving around very everyday things such as vegetables, fruits, cows, milk… mainly food, animals, plants.
For example, Frieza ‘s family members have names related to ice and cold things ( Frieza, Cold, Frost …) and the Saiyans have names related to ice and cold things (Frieza, Cold, Frost…) and the Saiyans have names related to vegetables ( Vegeta, Kakarotto, Nappa, Raditz…) . ).
The names Beerus and Whis are also puns in this way. Initially, it was thought that Beerus and Whis were puns on virus, but that is not the case. In fact, Beerus and Whis are inspired by alcoholic drinks.
While Whis was named by author Akira Toriyama , Beerus was named by assistant Yusuke Watanabe , the scriptwriter for The Battle of Gods . Beerus obviously comes from Beer, which is beer in English, while the name Whis comes from Whiskey , an alcoholic beverage.
During his creative process, Toriyama often writes in general terms about how the story will develop and create the characters. It’s up to his team of assistants to fill in the gaps. That’s why most of the characters weren’t named by Toriyama .
Additionally, this drink-naming pun also applies to Champa (Champagne) and Vados ( Calvados ), which are creatures from universe 6.
The Dragon Ball Super movie is currently on hiatus. The anime ended in March 2018 with the conclusion of the Tournament of Power. However, the manga continues to be published monthly with new adventures.
