Casting News: Hughie’s Missing Mother Joins ‘The Boys’ Season 4, Promising Intense Family Drama.

The R-rated superhero spoof welcomes back Simon Pegg as Hughie’s father, adding another veteran of Supernatural.

The fourth season of The Boys is planning a significant and undoubtedly turbulent family reunion.

Rosemarie DeWitt (The Estate, The Staircase) has been cast as Jack Quaid’s character Hughie Campbell’s missing mother in the R-rated Amazon superhero drama, which is being handled by showrunner Eric Kripke. The streamer made the announcement on Thursday.

Hugh Campbell, Sr., the father of Simon Pegg’s Hughie, was thought to have died long ago. But as the season 2 finale made clear, she left them when Hughie was just six years old.

The way Hughie tells it in that episode, “It was like some silent alarm went off, and she was like, ‘F— them, time to go!'” All she seemed to leave for Hughie was a love of Billy Joel and a determination to be nothing like her.

Quaid unpacked that season 2 finale moment in a 2020 conversation with EW. “He has the need to defend and protect and nurture those around him that he really cares about. He’s desperate to keep his family in tact,” he said of Hughie. “The reason why he gloms onto people is because his mom left him. He never wants to do that to anyone ever again, and it comes out in interesting ways, ways that could be considered a little bit codependent, a little destructive in a way. But I think he’s starting to pull himself out of that rut at the end of the season.”

Although Hughie’s mother’s true nature is still unknown for the time being, there is a widely held fan belief that she is actually a supe and that she departed to protect her kid.

For the next fourth season, which is now being filmed in Toronto, Pegg’s Hugh will also be back. In the third season this year, he made a fleeting appearance during a FaceTime chat with Hughie.

Rob Benedict, a Supernatural veteran who portrayed God in the last season, and Elliot Knight, who is most known for Animal Kingdom and for portraying Gaz in the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, were the other two names added to the roster, but details about their roles are yet unknown.

According to Amazon, Knight will return for a fourth season.

Previously cast are Susan Heyward and Valorie Curry as supes Sister Sage and Firecracker, Cameron Crovetti in the more involved role of Homelander’s son Ryan, and long-time The Boys super fan Jeffrey Dean Morgan in an undisclosed part.
